Joe Turner's Come and Gone
"Magical realism" was the concept we explored for our production of Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
It's an apt description of the realistic journey of the tortured Harold Loomis and thousands like him during the Great Migration of Negroes (African-Americans) from the south to the north in the early 20th century.
These individuals were on a journey in search of some thing or someone to fulfil their idealized perception of wholeness.
The magic is that once they find their song, assisted by Bynum and the spirit of deceased loved ones, they find inner fulfilment.
